The most northerly point on mainland Britain is Dunnet Head (422ft), reached via a tortuous single-track road from the village of Dunnet. A more vigorous method of exploring here is to leave the car at the bottom of the hill and walk clockwise round Dunnet Head, starting from Dwarick Pier. Keep well back from the cliff edge if it is wet and windy.

Less taxing exercise may be found on the glorious beach of Dunnet Bay, backed by wildflower rich dunes. The beach was used as a practise area for Allied troops, prior to the Normandy landings during World War 2. It is more peaceful today, invariably deserted, loud with the cry of gulls and the sound of cold North Sea waves breaking on the golden shore.

HM The Queen Mum's northern residence is nearby at Castle of Mey, and her Longoe Farm with its prize-winning cattle. East along the A836 at Gills Bay, where the sea is close to the road, you will almost always see grey seals 'hauled out' onto seaweed-covered rocks. From John O'Groats, drive to Duncansby Head and walk south to discover an ornithologist's paradise. The cliffs here abound with resident and visiting birds.

Few places can rival the diversity and beauty of this most north-eastern corner of mainland Britain. Its majestic cliffs and silent moors, dramatic castles and centuries-old churches capture the heart and soul and spirit of Scotland.
